Illinois Lands Terrence Shannon Jr.

News

Champaign, ILL.– Head Coach Brad Underwood announced Tuesday that Terrence Shannon Jr. has signed a Big Ten Tender of Financial Aid with the University of Illinois and is joining the Fighting Illini program as a transfer.

Shannon is a 6-foot-6-inch, 215-pound guard from Chicago. He played the last three seasons at Texas Tech, averaging 11.0 points (915) and 3.6 rebounds (299) in 83 games with 54 starts during his career with the Red Raiders.

"It's exciting to welcome Terrence Shannon home to Illinois," Underwood said. "He is a young man we've known for a long time, going back to his high school recruitment, and having had on campus for an official visit. He's an athletic, powerful wing who is aggressive on both ends of the floor and is electric in transition. And what I love most about his game is the versatility he has to play and defend multiple positions. TJ is a winner who will bring a wealth of experience to our roster, and he is an accomplished student who fits the tremendous academic profile we have here at the University of Illinois."

Shannon averaged 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists this past season as a junior. He shot 45.5% from the field and 38.4% from 3-point range while helping lead Texas Tech to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. Shannon scored in double figures 12 times, led by a season-high 23 points in a win over West Virginia (1/22/22). He also had 20-point outings in wins against TCU (2/12/22) and Montana State (3/18/22) in the NCAA Tournament first round, and he posted a double-double with 18 points and career-high 12 rebounds in a victory over Tennessee (12/7/21). Shannon earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team after scoring 15 points in the quarterfinal win over Iowa State (3/10/22) and netting 14 in the title game vs. Kansas (3/12/22).

Shannon was a third-team All-Big 12 selection and Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award finalist as a sophomore, helping the Red Raiders to the NCAA Round of 32. He averaged a career-best 12.9 points with 4.0 rebounds on 44.8% shooting and 35.7% 3-point shooting. Shannon tallied double digits in 22 games with five 20-point contests and recorded his first career double-double with season highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds in a victory at LSU (1/30/21).

Shannon averaged 9.8 points and 4.1 rebounds as a freshman while shooting 47% from the field, earning Big 12 All-Freshman Team accolades. He set his career scoring high in a trip home to Chicago, tallying 24 points at DePaul (12/4/19). He later scored 23 in a home win over West Virginia (1/29/20).

Shannon also is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, earning first-team distinction as a junior after receiving second-team recognition as a sophomore.

Shannon was a four-star, top-100 recruit in the class of 2019 who spent his final season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Prior to prep school he attended Chicago's Lincoln Park High School for four years, playing both basketball and football.
