URBANA, Ill. – For the second-straight season, the Illinois women's tennis team put together a come-from-behind upset victory over Northwestern on Senior Day as the Illini celebrated senior Shivani Ingle in style with a 4-3 win against the Wildcats on Sunday (April 17) afternoon in Atkins Tennis Center.
The Illini improve to 14-7 and 7-2 in the Big Ten, while wrapping its regular season home slate with an impressive 11-1, with their 11 wins ranking in a tie for the second-most wins in a home schedule in program history.
It was an epic battle in doubles as the Wildcats (12-7, 7-2 B1G) won on court one, while the No. 3 doubles team of junior Emily Casati and freshman Kasia Treiber came all the way back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the score at 5-5, before eventually falling 7-5 to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The junior duo of Ashley Yeah and Josie Frazier were leading 6-5 when the point was clinched.
Northwestern made it 2-0 after a win on court six, before the Illini tied it up with back-to-back victories at No. 1 and 2 singles as sophomore Kate Duong took down No. 110 Clarissa Hand, 6-2, 7-5, and Yeah earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over Maria Shusharina.
After another UI setback on court three, Treiber and Megan Heuser came in clutch as Treiber knotted the score at 3-3 with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win over Christina Hand. All eyes turned to court four as Heuser defeated Ema Lazic, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to send the Illini to the 4-3 victory.  Â
