WALNUT, Calif. – The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams continued to find success on day two of the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays on Friday (April 15), including two event titles and 19 personal-best performances.
Starting at the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific University at the Cougar Athletic Stadium, redshirt-junior Billy Matzek had a standout day as he turned in a new outdoor personal-best mark of 16.96m to win the men's shot put, before adding a second personal-best mark of the day with a toss of 54.73m to finish sixth in the men's hammer throw.
For the second-straight weekend, freshman Tacoria Humphrey took home the women's high jump title, posting an outdoor personal-best of 1.74m for her fourth high jump title in her short career. Joining her in the top five was graduate student Kristin Higgins with a fourth-place finish after also recording an outdoor personal-best of 1.71m.
Moving to the track, graduate student Jon Davis added another stellar performance to his name as he registered the second-best time in program history in the men's 1,500m with a new personal-best of 3:36.85, just behind program record holder Marko Koers, who posted a time of 3:33.05 during the 1996 season.
Also adding personal-best performances on the day were redshirt-junior Kashief King, with a time of 47.57 to place fourth in the men's 400m, as well as freshmen CJ Shoaf (2.08m) in the men's high jump, Mia Abraham (5.56m) in the women's long jump and Dacorey Ware (21.44) in the men's 200m.
Day two at the Mt. SAC Relays was highlighted by two runner-up finishes and eight personal-best performances. Freshman Tori Thomas equaled her personal-best with a mark of 4.15m to place second in the women's pole vault collegiate B competition, while sophomore Kelsey Rothas tied for second with an outdoor personal-record of 3.85m in the women's pole vault collegiate C competition.
Freshman DeVontae Ford registered a pair of personal-bests on the day, coming in the men's 110m hurdles (14.26) and the men's 400m hurdles (52.06), with junior Robert Williams also turning in a personal-best time of 51.56 in the men's 400m hurdles and freshman Logan Neely recorded a personal-best time of 1:01.67 in the women's 400m hurdles. Â
Junior Jessica McDowell posted a personal-best time of 23.81 in the women's 200m, while freshman Daniel Mboyo added an outdoor personal-best mark of 6.96m in the men's long jump.
