CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics is encouraging fans attending Monday's men's basketball game vs. Monmouth to recycle all possible concessions containers used at State Farm Center. The game coincides with the 22nd Annual America Recycles Day, set for November 15 by the United States EPA, to educate about the importance of recycling throughout the country.
This Fighting Illini Fighting Waste Event is being held in conjunction with the UI Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment; the University of Illinois Facilities and Services Department: and Coca-Cola, the official beverage partner of Campus. Coca-Cola is partnering with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on a year-long campaign to bring recycling awareness to the campus in order to help keep plastic and metal drink containers out of the waste system.
The goals of the November 14 game are to have fans recycle as much items as possible during the game thus reducing the number of items going into landfills, to increase public awareness of campus recycling, and to encourage basketball attendees to actively recycle at State Farm Center.
In order to help assist with this initiative, student volunteers will be located at State Farm Center vomitories and in the arena during game timeouts to help collect plastic drink bottles and aluminum beer bottles and cans. Additional recycling containers will also be located in the State Farm Center concourses. Fans will also be able to win commemorative Illinois t-shirts highlighting Fighting Illini Fighting Waste initiatives.
