Champaign, ILL. –– Illinois will open the 2022-23 season at No. 23 in the Associated Press Top 25.
This marks the third year in a row that the Illini are ranked in the preseason poll, after starting at No. 8 in 2020-21 and No. 11 in 2021-22.
Head Coach Brad Underwood's Illini appearing in the AP preseason rankings for three straight seasons is a first for the program since the introductory polls of 2003-04 (No. 13), 2004-05 (No. 5) and 2005-06 (No. 17).
It is the 19th time in program history, meanwhile, that the Illini are ranked in the preseason poll.
Illinois is one of just three Big Ten teams ranked in the preseason poll, along with Indiana (No. 13) and Michigan (No. 22). The Illini once again play a challenging non-conference schedule featuring No. 8 UCLA, either No. 5 Baylor or No. 18 Virginia, and No. 12 Texas.
