Box Score 2 URBANA, Ill - Illinois kicked of its spring 2022 dual match schedule against Ohio State and Chicago State on Saturday (Jan. 22).
The Illini fell to Ohio State 4-0 in the first match of the day. The Orange and Blue were able to stay close with the number one and number two doubles teams in the country, losing the two matches 7-5 and 7-6(3). No. 97 Olivier Stuart fought into a first set tiebreaker against #21 Cannon Kingsley, the match would end 6-6(11-11).
Illinois looked to bounce back against Chicago State. They did that, first winning the doubles point in 30 minutes. Alex Brown and Gabrielius Guzausksas defeated Hugo Hidalgo Vega and Max Sandoval 6-2 before Lucas Horve and Hunter Heck clinched doubles on court one. They defeated Jakov Suler and Jesus Perez Plaza 6-1.
In singles, five Illini won their first set. Alex Petrov was the first Illini to finish, defeating Max Sandoval 6-0,6-1 to put Illinois up 2-0 in the match. Hunter Heck finished next on court two, defeating Jakov Suler 6-2, 6-2 and giving Illinois the 3-0 advantage.
Nic Meister won his first set vs Jakub Zamorski 6-3 and went to a second set tie break on court six. On the first point of the tie-break the Chicago State player had his 4th over rule of the match which is a game penalty because the tie break counts as a game, the second set and then match went to Meister.
Meister's win clinched the Illini's win.
