NEW YORK - Former Illinois tennis player Aleks Kovacevic will play in the US Open Qualifying Tournament, after being granted a wild card the US Open announced Wednesday.
"I grew up in New York City, grew up going to the US Open every year, was a ball boy there when I was a kid, truly is a dream come true to play, said Kovacevic. "Although it does feel surreal, I do feel ready for this moment, having seen and competed against a lot of the players in the draw already in my short career since turning pro in May. Big thanks to the USTA and the US Open committee for also believing in me and giving me this opportunity."
"We are tremendously excited for Kova to join the other Illini participating at the US Open," said Illinois head coach Brad Dancer. "Growing up in NY it's always been on his wish list. He will cherish this opportunity and continue to prepare for more. This is another step in his journey."
The first round of qualifying is next Tuesday, August 24 at 11:00 A.M. ET at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
