Red Hot Illini Take Down Purdue

URBANA, Ill. – The Illinois Fighting Illini women's tennis squad defeated Purdue on Sunday afternoon 4-3. The second win of the weekend moves the Illini to 5-6 (5-6) on the year, while dropping Purdue to 3-8 (3-8).
The day began with Purdue taking the doubles point behind wins on courts one and two. The third match was left unfinished.
Moving to singles, sophomore Josie Frazier began the attack for the Illini, winning in straight sets on court five (6-3, 6-1). Frazier has been a spark for Illinois, not losing a singles match in her last seven tries (six wins, one match left unfinished).
Fellow sophomore Ashley Yeah took care of business on court four (6-1, 6-3) before freshman Kate Duong fell on court two to settle the score at 2-2. Senior Emilee Duong then came up clutch with a big win on court three (6-2, 6-4) to give Illinois the 3-2 lead.
After sophomore Emily Casati dropped her match on court six, it was left to senior Asuka Kawai to clinch for the Orange and Blue. She did just that, winning a three set thriller to secure the victory for the Illini (4-6, 7-5, 6-2).
Winners of four of their last five matches, Illinois has five remaining dual matches before the Big Ten Tournament in Madison, Wis.,starting on April 29.
Next Up
Illinois will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Wisconsin and Minnesota. They will take on the Badgers in Madison at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 26 followed by the Gophers in Minneapolis on Sunday, March 28 at 10:00 a.m.
