The Basketball Tournament
The Illinois alumni team House of 'Paign knocked off No. 1 seed and defending champion Carmen's Crew (Ohio State alumni), 76-68, in Wednesday's round of 16 action at The Basketball Tournament (TBT).
Featuring five former Fighting Illini players and coached by alum Mike LaTulip, House of 'Paign recorded the biggest upset of The Tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals in the $1 million single-elimination event.
House of 'Paign opened up a 31-20 lead in the first half before Carmen's Crew came storming back to take a 44-39 lead into intermission. Trailing 50-41 in the third quarter, House of 'Paign answered with an impressive 16-2 run to regain control at 57-52.
Leading 65-64 near the 4-minute mark, Mike Daum drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key off a drive and dish feed from Andres Feliz. That put House of 'Paign ahead by four and set up the Elam Ending.
Daum drove baseline on an isolation play and finished with a dunk for the first two of the necessary eight points, and Kyle Vinales finished it off with three consecutive buckets to seal the win and send House of 'Paign on to the quarters.
The dynamic duo of Daum and Feliz led the way once again. Daum finished with game highs of 23 points and eight rebounds, while Feliz had 15 points, matched Daum with eight boards, and tallied a game-high five assists. Malcolm Hill added 11 points and six rebounds in the victory.
Through two games in TBT, Feliz is now averaging 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
Next up for House of 'Paign is a matchup with Dayton alumni Red Scare on Friday at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN.
