Illini Golf in the Pros | Stricker Wins U.S. Senior Open Championship

Illini alum Steve Stricker won his second major championship on Sunday, as he took a commanding six-shot lead over the tournament field at the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame. The third wire-to-wire U.S. Open Champion and the first since 2011, Stricker finished at 19-under par in total after rounds of 62-64-66-69.

His 261 72-hole tally tally broke the U.S. Senior Open record, set two years ago by Kenny Perry at Salem Country Club. Stricker also set records for the lowers 36-hole and 54-hole scores (126 and 192), and tied the largest margin of victory at a U.S. Senior Open. His opening round 62 also tied the record for the lowest 18-hole tournament score. 

Stricker made only two bogeys in the tournament, going for a record 57 holes without a bogey. 

Also competing over the weekend, Illini alum Thomas Detry tied for eighth at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation. Detry closed play at 2-under par in total, finishing just one shot behind tournament host,Garcia.  

Several Illini were competing in Utah this weekend as well, taking on the Korn Ferry Tour's (formerly the Web.com Tour) Utah Championship presented by Zions Bank. Dylan Meyer and Nick Hardy joined Luke Guthrie and Brian Campbell in the field. Paired together for Sunday's round, Campbell and Guthrie tied for 20th individually with scores 8-under par. 

Scott Langley was in action on the PGA TOUR, appearing in the field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Coming up this week, Langley is set to take on the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. He will be joined in the field by fellow Illini Charlie Danielson. 

On the European Tour, Thomas Pieters and Detry are set to take on the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, while Campbell will take on the Korn Ferry Tour's LECOM Health Challenge. Meyer is set to be an alternate in the field.
