March 17, 2019 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – The Illinois softball team finished off its non-conference tournament action with a 4-1 win over Cal Poly in the finale of LMU Tournament on a sunny Sunday (March 17) morning at Smith Field.
"It was not our best showing at the plate today but we did what we needed to do to secure the win," said head coach Tyra Perry. "Our defense was steady behind Sydney Sickels - which was one of our main goals. I feel good about what we have accomplished so far as the tournament heavy part of our season comes to an end. I look forward to the upcoming home stretch at Eichelberger Field."
The Illini, who improve to 16-5 on the season, were led by senior Veronica Ruelius with a 4-for-8 performance at the plate with three RBI and three runs. Sophomore Maddison Demers paced the squad with six RBI and a .417 (5-12) clip, while redshirt-senior Annie Fleming – who turned 23 on Sunday – totaled team-highs of six hits and five runs on the weekend.
Freshman Sydney Sickels (11-2) had another strong showing in the circle, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.17 ERA after giving just up three earned runs and striking out eight in 18.0 innings.
The Illini opened the scoring with a three-run first frame as Fleming struck first with an RBI single up the middle, followed by a two-run pinch-hit double from freshman Kailee Powell.
CPU broke up the shutout with a two-out solo home run in the top of the fourth, but the Illini answered back with a run in the fifth as Ruelius notched an infield single and senior Kiana Sherlund scored on a Mustang error for the 4-1 win.
Sickels earned her third win of the weekend after allowing just one earned run on five hits and striking out two in a complete game effort.
The Illini totaled five hits on the day with Ruelius going 2-for-3 and Powell tallying two RBI and a hit.
