BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team put together a number of lifetime-best times, as well as three times that rank on the top-10 fastest individuals list on the final day of the 2019 Big Ten Championships. The Orange and Blue secured a final team total of 190 to place 13th at the event.
"Overall we had some success this meet," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "Of course we would have liked to finish higher in the standings, but this meet we scored more points than last year and moved up in multiple events. The seniors did a fabulous job with their performances and leading the team. I appreciate all of their work and willingness to keep stepping up when called on for the team."
The swimming highlight of the day came from Jimena Martinez, as the sophomore clocked a 200 breaststroke prelim time of 2:16.34 to move up to eighth fastest on the school's fastest individuals list and place 27th on the event. Junior Kristin Anderson earned a 29th-place finish in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 50.75.
The 400 freestyle relay team wrapped up the night with an impressive time of 3:23.16. The time ties for the 11th fastest in the event in program history.
