Chip Shots: UCF Challenge with Stang Sukaree

Hello Illini Family!
After enjoying a relaxing and restful winter break to recharge, we are excited to have already begun our spring tournament season. This is the first time we have played a tournament in early February. With our training trip to Florida and the Demirjian Golf Facility here on campus, we were off to the Sunshine State again. We were very excited to start off our season in a new tournament that we have not played in before.
After landing in Florida, we went to the hotel and got some rest to prepare ourselves for the practice round the next morning. It was a beautiful day to gather information to aid in our preparation. We had a fun surprise on hole 2, where we met a parrot that speaks Spanish!
That night for dinner we ate at Nona Blue, which is owned by professional golfer Graeme McDowell. We had a great time before going back to the hotel to have a team meeting and finish some homework. With three team members having exams and one team member having an online quiz proctored during this trip, there was a lot of studying taking place!
It was a foggy morning on the first day at the tournament, delaying the first round by 15 minutes. We had many birdie opportunities but were just not able to capitalize on them. We learned a lot from the round that we would later apply to our second day. During round two, we again gave ourselves many birdie opportunities. Unfortunately, we did not match our lines and speed on the greens to take advantage of the strong approach shots. We had a team meeting right after the round to discuss our highlights of the round as well as formulate a plan for the final round.
It was a nice, sunny day on the last day of the tournament. Again, we gave ourselves many birdie opportunities, but were not able to get the most out of it. Although it was a tough start for us, we learned a lot about our games and will use the next two weeks to focus on some key areas to prepare ourselves for the next tournament in Arizona. Looking forward to a great trip and golf at Westbrook!
