CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois second baseman Michael Massey was named the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner for second base, Rawlings announced Wednesday on Twitter. Massey was one of four finalists along with Louisiana's Hunter Kasuls, Oregon State's Nick Madrigal and Duke's Max Miller.
Massey is Illinois' first Gold Glove winner in the 12-year history of the award. The American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings started sponsoring the award in 2007. The popular Major League Baseball Gold Glove has been around since 1957.
Massey made only one error while starting all 53 games at second base. He finished the year with 166 assists and a .996 fielding percentage.
Massey had more defensive chances than any middle infielder in the nation that made one or fewer errors. He went on a 60-game errorless streak (April 22, 2017-May 12, 2018).
