Second career All-America honor for Illini redshirt freshman
COLLEGE STATION, TX – Illinois track and field redshirt freshman Jon Davis earned All-America honors in the 3,000m final at the NCA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday evening. Davis timed 8:21.69 in the race, placing 15th overall.
Davis' teammate David Kendziera placed 12th in the 60m hurdle semifinals on Friday night. The All-America honor was the seventh of the redshirt senior's career.
"I know David and Jonathan are both disappointed in their finish, and I think that's natural," said head coach Mike Turk. "It's quite an accomplishment just to qualify. And, I'm willing to bet there are thousands of athletes that would love the same opportunity. So, like any other opportunity that doesn't end up where you'd like, you remain grateful, learn, grow and work to return and do better."
The only freshman in the field, Davis earned the second All-America honor of his career. After redshirting the 2017 indoor season, Davis placed 16th in the 5,000m final at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon last June.
Named Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year on Monday, March 5, Davis qualified for NCAA Championships with a 7:49.92 performance in the event at the Iowa State Classic on February 9, setting a new Illinois school record. One of two record-setting performances this indoor season, Davis also set a program record in the mile, becoming the 498th American to finish the race in less than four minutes by clocking 3:58.46 on January 27 at the Illini Classic.
Up next, the Fighting Illini track and field team will begin preparation for the 2018 outdoor season. The Orange and Blue make their outdoor season debut March 23-24 in Carbondale, Illinois at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic.
