Barnett Places 11th in 10K
LINCOLN, Neb. – Fighting Illini distance runners Ian Barnett, Dan Lathrop and Billy Magnesen kicked off Big Ten Championships with three top-15 performances in the 10,000m. Barnett led the group with a time of 30:21.76 to place 11th overall, followed by Lathrop in 12th and Magnesen in 15th.
"The effort was there," said Head Coach Mike Turk. "Dan ran a much better race than last time out. Obviously, Ian is disappointed. He ran smart, was in good position and made the move the way he was to supposed to. However, his Achilles flared up with about a mile and a half to go and he just couldn't keep pace. He's been a champion for us and I have no regrets over his effort, only that he didn't reap the rewards he's worked for."
Ian Barnett entered the meet as one of the top distance runners in the conference, clocking a Big Ten leading 29:10.83 mark in the 10,000m earlier this season. However, the senior came up short this evening with a 30:21.76 time that finished outside the top-10.
Lathrop followed Barnett with a time of 30:21.97, while Magnesen placed three spots lower after finishing in 30:36.28.
The only other competition of day one for the Illini came in the hammer throw where Michael Hyc and Matsen Dziedzic placed 15th and 16th, respectively. Hyc marked 178'6" (54.42m) on his third throw to best Dziedzic's heave of 176'5" (53.77m).
