
Barnett Tops Day 1 for @IlliniMTrack at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, IA – The Fighting Illini opened Drake Relays with three events on Thursday evening. Ian Barnett posted the top performance of day one with a 14:00.68 mark in the 5K run. Three other individuals competed in either the 5K or 10K, while the team contested its first relay of the meet in the 4x1600m.
Ian Barnett, who holds the third-best 5K mark in program history, placed fourth overall in the event with a time of 14:00.68. Alex Gold and Billy Magnesen also competed in the 5K, finishing with times of 14:23.32 and 14:41.25, respectively.
Junior Sean Pengelly was the only Illini in the 10K, finishing with a time of 31:48.88.
In their opening event of the Hy-Vee Cup competition, Jared Christiansen, Alex Gold, Zack Smith and David Schmieg combined for a time of 17:15.40.
The Fighting Illini will return for day two of Drake Relays tomorrow morning, beginning with the javelin at 10 a.m. Other events tomorrow include the 4x100m and 4x400m prelims, 4x800m and the pole vault.
