Viney PR Qualifies Him For 60m Hurdle Final
LINCOLN, NEB. – The Orange and Blue wrapped up day one of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite with a handful of top-10 finishes and a personal-record time by Cam Viney in the 60m hurdles. The fifth-place finish by Viney qualified him for tomorrow's event final.
In only his second meet back with the team this season, 2015 All-American Cam Viney set a personal-record 7.82 time in the 60m hurdle prelims. The time was fifth-best qualifying time, and just a split-second behind Nebraska's Oladapo Akinmoladun (7.815) in his heat. The 7.82 time moves him into a tie for third-place with Sherman Armstrong (2000) on Illinois' indoor top-10 list.
Parker Deloye kicked off the competition this morning for the Illini with his first heptathlon of the season. Deloye began his day in the 60m dash, where he clocked a 7.36 time to place third in his heat, and ninth overall. The sophomore moved into eighth in the heptathlon standings with a personal-record 21-91/2 (6.64m) leap in the long jump, and then climbed two more spots with a 40-61/2 (12.36m) personal-record mark in the shot put. In the final event of the day, Deloye cleared 6-51/2 (1.97m) in the high jump, but couldn't quite match his indoor PR of 6-63/4 (2.00m). Deloye will begin tomorrow's final three events in fifth-place.
In the weight throw, Matsen Dziedzic led the Illini with a 60-51/4 (18.42m) throw on, placing ninth. Michael Hyc also competed in the event this afternoon, marking a 53-113/4 (16.45m) heave.
Back on the track, Mo Maat and Cole Henderson both came up shy of qualifying for tomorrow's final. Maat fell four spots outside of the final with a 6.83 time, good for 12th-place. Henderson placed 17th overall in the event with a time of 6.87.
In the 400m, Kenneth Allen was the top Illini finisher, leading the way with a season-best time of 47.91. His eighth-place finish beat out teammate Cam Viney, who placed 15th overall with a 48.32 mark, and Matt Burns' 50.07 season-debuting time.
In the final event of the day, two Illini placed in the top-10 of the 5,000m run. Senior Jereme Atchison led the way with a 14:54.71 mark, while junior Sean Pengelly came in less than two seconds behind Atchison with a 14:56.27 time. Rounding out the three Illini in the event was Joe Cowlin, completing the 5,000 meters in 15:12.25.
The Illini return to action tomorrow morning with the conclusion of the heptathlon. In the afternoon, Jonathan Wells will compete against some of the nation's best in the high jump, while All-Americans Cam Viney, 60m hurdles, and Dylan Lafond, 3,000m, will compete in their respective events.
