AMES, IOWA. – The Fighting Illini wrapped up action at the Iowa State Classic with four more top-five performances, highlighted by three Illini in the top-five of the 60m dash. Head Coach Mike Turk also saw his shot putters both set personal-records in the event.
"If you take away what's on paper, the time or the distance out of the equation and just watch them, I feel like this weekend we had a bunch of guys that passed the eye test," said Head Coach Mike Turk." I'd rather run modest PR times and look good, then to look out there and feel like that's all there is and there's no more. I felt like across the board, as a whole, this is the best we've looked this year."
Three Illini qualified for the 60m dash final in the morning prelim heats. Devin Quinn qualified for the final by winning his heat, timing a 6.89 dash. Though in separate heats, sophomores Mo Maat and Cole Henderson timed identical 6.848 times in the the prelim to join Quinn.
"These guys have been banged up, but we're in that position where we can't make up for lost time. They're in the spot they're in, we just have to be more consistent. And, they'll be ready to go at Big Ten Championships.
In the final of the 60m the Fighting Illini went 3-4—5 in consecutive fashion. Freshman Devin Quinn led the Orange and Blue with a 6.78 mark, followed by Maat (6.80) and Henderson (6.83).
The duo of Michael Hyc and Matsen Dziedzic impressed this afternoon in the shot put. For Hyc, he marked a 55'81/4" (16.97m), which sets a new personal record for the sophomore. For Dziedzic, he also clipped is previous personal-best mark of 54'1" (16.48m) by a quarter inch (54'11/4m).
"They've both been really good," said Coach Turk. "They've both set personal-records at every meet through today, except for last weekend. Last week, Matsen threw pretty well, and Mike through well and just didn't get the results, so today was a nice bounce back. I'm really impressed with the progress Mike has made. I think this a product of the hard work they're putting in. If you look back at where they were last year, it's a complete night and day difference." Â
In the men's 400m dash, Cam Viney set a personal-best time of 47.90, finishing seventh overall, while Kenneth Allen followed in 10th with a time of 48.04. Matt Burns made his collegiate debut in the event with a 49.90 mark.
In the high jump, Jonathan Wells couldn't manage to duplicate his performance at last weekend's Husker Invite where he made attempts at the school record. Today, Wells cleared 6'103/4" (2.10m) on his third attempt, but was unable to at 7'01/2 (2.15m), placing third in the event.
"It wasn't a really good day for him, certainly not the performance he wanted," said Turk. "However, for an off day, he still got third in the meet."
In middle distance events, Garrett Lee and Jesse Reiser both showed well in the mile run. Garrett Lee won his section of the mile with a personal-record time of 4:07.58, while Liam Markham ran the mile in 4:07.90. Running unattached in the mile was Jesse Reiser, placing third in his heat with a time of 4:06.26, and Bryce Basting, winning his heat with a time of 4:02.00.
"Garrett looked a little rough last week, and I think Coach Stewart got to the bottom of some things to help him sort some things out," explained Turk. "He just looked so much better today. I know he wanted to run a little faster, but I was really pleased with the way he ran. I think that Liam Markham, while the time wasn't great, ran a really heady race and really set up some things for Big Ten Championships." Â Â
In the 800m, Tony Zea finished in 1:55.05 and Konrad Eiring crossed the finish line in 1:55.94.
"I think this was a really good weekend for our distance runners," said Head Coach Mike Turk. "Our distance program is maturing, and it's so much better in a long, long time. Jake [Stewart] has done a great job, and the results are really starting to show. You saw results last night, Ian Barnett ran a good 3K, Lathrop and Magnesen both ran personal-records in the 5K, and it picked up [again] today."
Next up, the Fighting Illini will host the Orange and Blue Open on Saturday, February 20 at the UI Armory. It will be their final tune up prior to Big Ten Championships the following weekend.
