Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing at Purdue Invitational

Fighting Illini win two doubles and a singles flight on the weekend
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Illinois Women's Tennis team represented the Orange and Blue well at the Purdue Invitational this past weekend, winning both doubles flights and taking a singles flight.
"It was nice to win both flights of doubles, and both teams did a great job in their three matches," head coach Evan Clark said.
The pairs of Madie Baillon and Jaclyn Switkes, as well as Alexis Casati and Daniela Pedraza Novak, won the Gold Doubles draw and Black Doubles draw, respectively. Switkes also took the championship in the singles Boiler Up draw.
Baillon and Switkes defeated Nellie Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina of Miami (Ohio), Lipscombs's Viktoriya Dzyuba and Denise Buberl, Andreanna Christopoulou and Lisa Friess of Western Kentucky, and Northern Illinois' pair of Adey Osabuohien and Raven Neely to take first place in the Gold Doubles flight.
In the Black Doubles draw, Casati and Pedraza Novak's path went through Bowling Green State's Polina Radeva and Anna Kholodnaya, Carmen Blanco and Isabelle Dohanics of Ball State, WKU's Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest, as well as the pair of Megan Horn and Ayumi Sasaki from BGSU.
Louisville's Elle Stokes, Dzyuba of Miami (Ohio), and Purdue's Alex Sabe fell to Switkes in the Boiler Up singles draw.
"Jaclyn had a fantastic tournament, winning her flight of singles," Clark said.
Baillon almost matched her doubles partner, making it all the way to the finals her Purdue singles flight, before falling to Maryland's Alexandra Stanova.
Overall, the Fighting Illini finished with an 8-4 mark in doubles, and a 10-8 mark in singles on the tournament.
"We had too many ups and downs overall throughout the weekend," Clark said. "We certainly saw a lot of positives and will look to continue to make progress as we move forward with our fall season.
