Newburgh, Ind. -Â Illinois Men's Golf earned its 13th Big Ten Championship title on Sunday at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind. With a final tally 14-under par, the Illini finished 32 strokes ahead of second place Iowa. The title marks the sixth Championship for the Illini under head coach Mike Small. Illinois' team tally of 1138 marks the fourth lowest score for a team at the Big Ten Championships since the tournament format switched to 72-holes. It is the lowest score for the Illini at the Big Ten Tournament in the 72-hole format as well.
"I'm ecstatic for the team win," head coach Mike Small said. "This was a goal for us at the beginning of the year and we had been building up for this all spring. It's great for Nick to win the tournament after struggling last week at Purdue, he came here this week and took care of business. He and played hard and won and that is a big plus for our program. It shows the resiliency that these kids have."
Freshman Nick Hardy won co-medalist honors as he shot 4-under par in the tournament to tie with Iowa's Carson Schaake. Hardy marks the fifth consecutive medalist for the Illini at the Big Ten Championships. Illinois is only the fourth school in Big Ten history to have five consecutive medalists, following only Michigan (1932-1936), Purdue (1956-1960) and Ohio State (1976-1979). All five Illinois players finished among the top-10 individuals in this year's championships.
Hardy came into the final day holding on to a score 8-under par, but he experienced some difficulty right off the bat. Hardy bogeyed his second hole of the day, but recovered nicely with a birdie to follow. He closed the front nine 3-over par due to a bogey and a double bogey. Once again, however, he recovered with a birdie on the 10th hole. His medalist honors came down to the final hole of the tournament as Hardy and Schaake were both 5-under par when they teed off on 18. Hardy made a solid putt for par on the hole, but it fell just short. Schaake followed Hardy and overshot his putt for par. The two both bogeyed 18 to shoot 4-under par on the tournament.
"I love that it came down to the last shot," Hardy said of his final hole. "I love the competition and seeing what I've got coming down the stretch. I just stayed in the moment and tried to hang around until the end. It feels great to have a team championship also, I can't wait to go get another one."
Junior Thomas Detry took home the league's Les Bolstad award, as he holds the league's lowest stroke average this season. Going into this weekend's tournament, Detry held a stroke average of 70.26. Detry marks the second consecutive Illini to win the award as junior Charlie Danielson took home the honor last year.
Detry came into the final round with a three-round score 4-under par. He tallied three birdies on the front nine of Sunday's round, including back-to-back birdies before the turn. He made that three in a row as he also recorded a birdie on the 10th hole. The junior carded a 3-under par score on the front nine, but closed the round 2-over par. He shot 2-under for the tournament to tie for 3rd overall.
Senior Brian Campbell earned a tie for fifth place in his final appearance at the Big Ten Championships. After a 6-over par finish to the second round, Campbell posted a score 3-under par in the third round. He continued his recovery, closing out his final round with a score 1-under par. Campbell started out the fourth round with a double bogey on the fourth hole, but a birdie on the next hole helped give him some extra momentum. Campbell recorded four more birdies on the back nine, giving him a 3-under par score on the final nine holes of the tournament.
Playing near his hometown, freshman Dylan Meyer tied for seventh individually in his first appearance at the Big Ten Championships. Meyer negated two bogeys on the back nine of his final round, but made bogey on his final hole of the tournament. He closed out the round 1-over par for a total tournament score just 2-over.
Rounding out the Illini lineup, junior Charlie Danielson entered the final round of play just 1-over par. He shot even on the front nine, before closing out the round with five-straight bogeys. Danielson's fourth round tally 4-over par gave him a final score 5-over par to place 11th at the tournament.
"We'll find out in a couple weeks where we go for NCAA Regionals," Small said of the team's future. "We'll go there and take care of business just like we did here. We'll have the same mindset."
