AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Fighting Illini women's golf team started the day strong with a second round score of 300, an 11 stroke improvement from the day before. However, a third round total of 317 resulted in Illinois finishing in seventh place in the 14-team Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate tournament played out at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
"We had a solid round this morning and obviously an improvement over yesterday's round but the golf course jumps up and bites you and got us several times," said Illinois head coach Renee Slone. "We had a lot of big numbers throughout the course of the tournament and struggled to finish this afternoon. We never got things going in the right direction but people hung in there."
Sam Postillion continued her solid play through the final two rounds, securing sole possession of second place with a 221 total (+5). The redshirt junior accomplished a career best finish and tied her career low round of 71 in the second round today. In addition, Postillion was the lone Illini to shoot an under-par round in the tournament. Sam also tallied six birdies, with two being on back-to-back holes on 15 and 16 in the final round.
"Sam has been working very hard and it's exciting to see all of this coming together for her," added Slone. "She has really been focusing and doing some different things on the golf course that are really working well for her. She had her fair share of struggles but hung in there and kept fighting. She believed in herself, stayed positive, which was imperative, and kept her confidence up."
Following Postillion was freshman Stephanie Miller who finished tied for 30th after shooting a 233 (+17). Freshman Emily Joers who tied for 42nd with a 238 (+22) along with senior Ember Schuldt (238, +22) rounded out the scorecard for the Orange and Blue. Finally, junior Erin Ahern completed her three round tournament with a final total of 250 (+34).
The 14th ranked Vanderbilt Commodores claimed tournament victory after letting it slip away last year in the final round. They shot a team total of 896 (+7) and tallied 16 birdies. Mercer University came in second with a 906 (+18) followed by No. 46 East Tennesse St. (911, +47), No. 41 University of Kansas (912, +48), and Campbell University (922, +58) to round out the top five.
Finishing up the lead individually was Mercer University’s Lacey Fears (217), who was in a two-way tie for first with Postillion going into Saturday’s play. She shot a 70 and 74 respectively to take the lead.
The Fighting Illini will resume tournament play again on March 24-25 when they travel to Johns Island, S.C. to play in the Briars Creek Invitational.
