
Longtime Illini Fencing Coach Arthur Schankin Dies at Age 87

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Arthur Schankin, the University of Illinois men's fencing coach from 1972 to 1993, died Thursday morning (Oct. 9, 2014) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was 87.

As the Fighting Illini head fencing coach, Schankin led his squad to eight Big Ten Conference Championships, and three other team titles after the Big Ten dropped fencing as an official conference sport. In addition to his success as the Illini fencing coach, Schankin was an undefeated NCAA champion in 1958 and was a three-time All-American fencer as a student-athlete at Illinois. He led the Illini to NCAA team titles in 1956 and 1958.
