CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Former University of Illinois men's tennis player Ruben Gonzales made national headlines this past weekend, producing a historic moment for the Philippines. Dubbed the 'biggest win of his career,' Gonzales upset higher-ranked Danai Udomchoke with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, victory during the second round of the 2013 Davis Cup Group II competition. 

"I played a great game today, I really tried my best," said Gonzales. "I just played point by point and tried to stay in the moment. This is the biggest win so far in my ATP career."

The victory marked the first win over Thailand in 28 years. Udomchoke is Thailand's top player, a former Asian Games gold medalist. In addition, the win sets the Philippines for a third round meeting with New Zealand for a chance to earn a promotion to Group I this September. 

This is not the first success Ruben has seen in 2013. At the start of March, Gonzales won the ITF USA F6 Futures doubles championship in Harlingen, Texas. 

"The Illini family is very proud of what Ruben has done," said Associate Head Coach Marcos Asse. "He made history for the Philippines. We just couldn't be prouder of what he accomplished. Credit to Ruben and how after every win or loss he just continues to get better. Big things are in store for him and we're excited to see what's next."
