Drake Relays Friday Results
| Thursday Results
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Illini 4x100m relay squad posted the second-fastest prelim time on Friday while the 4x400m relay and senior Azeez Shogbuyi (100m) each placed eighth in their respective prelims to advance to Saturday's event finals at the Drake Relays. Junior Andrew Riley, the reigning NCAA 110m hurdles champion, also was selected as the only collegian to race in the special invitational of the 110m hurdles on Saturday against some of the nation's top professionals.
"We showed some really good signs today," interim head coach Mike Turk said. "It was nice to get our 4x100m relay back out there on the track, and I was pretty pleased with the time they ran. We have some room to improve if we clean up our hand offs and will have a chance to win if pass the stick better. We also ran pretty well in the 4x400m relay."
Riley led off the 4x100m relay, which timed 40.30 and consisted of Shogbuyi, sophomore Josh Zinzer and junior Stanley Azie. The Illini won their heat by three thousandths of a second over Texas Arlington and had the quickest qualifying time behind only Oklahoma (40.16). Individually, Shogbuyi ran 10.84 in the 100m dash to move on to the final while Azie came up three spots short in 11th with a time of 10.95.
The 4x400m relay of seniors Shane Daniel and Cody Wisslead, sophomore Malcolm Taylor and senior Dan Jones advanced to the final with a season-best time of 3:11.80. In the finals of the 4x1600m relay, the quartet of junior Colin Mickow, sophomore Nathan Bohne, and juniors Chris DeSilva and Kyle Engnell came in fifth with a time of 16:56.57.
A pair of Illini freshmen also competed in the pole vault on Friday and each tallied season-best marks. Matthew Bane tied for eighth after clearing a height of 16-10 ¾ (5.15m) while Cody Klein was 16th with a mark of 16-4 ¾ (5.00m). A full list of Illini results from the start of the Drake Relays is listed below.
"Our pole vaulters really jumped well today," Turk said. "Matt was jumping at the winning height and had an outdoor PR. They handled the windy conditions pretty well and competed against a loaded field.
The Illini will return to the track on Saturday morning beginning with a trio of competitors in the 3,000m steeplechase.
