WACO, Texas - The University of Illinois softball team finished runners-up at the Getterman Classic, falling to the host-Baylor Bears on Sunday, 3-1. Jessica Davis, Meredith Hackett, Hollie Pinchback and Kelley Wedel were named to the Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team following the finale.
"Today we were beaten by a good pitcher," said Illinois head coach Terri Sullivan of Bears ace Whitney Canion. "We made some adjustments in comparison to the first time we played her [during Illinois' 4-1 loss to Baylor on Feb. 12]. We were threatening with the bases loaded and looking for the big hit, but we didn't get it today."
The Bears' offense staked Baylor (5-0 overall) to a 3-0 lead by plating one run in each of the first three innings. Kayce Walker led off the game for the Bears with a walk, scoring on an Illinois fielding error two batters later for the early 1-0 lead. Sydney Wilson scored on a Kathy Shelton single with two outs in the second to double the Baylor lead, while Dani Leal led off the third inning with a home run to cap scoring for the Bears.
"We gave Baylor too much to work with," Sullivan said. "We threw too many balls, issued too many walks and hit too many batters."
Illinois cut the deficit by one run in the fifth inning. Danielle Vaji and Danielle Zymkowitz connected on back-to-back singles and Pinchback reached first on a Baylor throwing error to load the bases with one out. Canion hit Hackett with a pitch to force home the lone Illini run of the day but retired Davis and Jackie Guy to work out of the jam.
Illinois (2-3) will travel to Miami, Fla., to take part in the Blue and Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament at Florida International, beginning on Friday, Feb. 18. During that span, the Orange and Blue will face Providence, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh and the host-Panthers.
