
Three Former Illini Compete in 2010 French Open

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Former Illini All-Americans Kevin Anderson, Rajeev Ram and Ryler DeHeart wrapped up play at the 2010 French Open in Paris last week at Roland Garros Stadium, as each competed in his second Grand Slam event of the year. All three also will be competing at Wimbledon, which is set to begin June 21.
Anderson and Ram, who are both currently ranked in the top 100 in the world, earned automatic bids into the main draw, while No. 176 DeHeart came up just short in qualifying play and fell to No. 114 Teimuraz Gabashvili (RUS), 7-6 (2), 6-4, who went on to advance to the fourth round of the tournament.
Anderson, who reached a career best No. 85 this past April, checked in at No. 93 in the most recent rankings. The Johannesburg, South Africa, native went up two sets in the opening round of the French Open before Edouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA) stormed back to take the final three sets and the match, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
No. 89 Ram also dropped his first-round match, as the Carmel, Ind., native was upended by No. 175 Yuri Schukin (KAZ), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Ram and teammate Eric Butorac also were eliminated in the first round of doubles, falling to Benjamin Becker and Scott Lipsky, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
