Bizzarri Takes Fifth in 5,000m at USA Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - In her final race in an Orange and Blue uniform, Illinois distance standout Angela Bizzarri posted a solid fifth-place finish in the 5,000m at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday night. The Mason, Ohio, native turned in a time of 15:39.81 at Drake Stadium, which ranks as the third-fastest mark in school history.
The three-time collegiate national champion held her own against the nation's elite distance runners for the second year in a row. Last season, Bizzarri recorded a third-place finish at the national meet with a school-record and personal-best time of 15:33.02. This time around, she was the top collegian and finished behind four professional runners. Lauren Fleshman (15:28.70) won the national title followed by Molly Huddle (15:30.89) in second, Jenny Barringer (15:33.33) in third and Jen Rhines (15:35.71) in fourth.
Illinois hurdler Tamika Robinson also was in action on Friday at the national meet. In the first round of the 100m hurdles, Robinson took third in her heat with a time of 13.48 to automatically qualify for Saturday's semifinal. The Chicago, Ill., native turned in the 9th-fastest time among the 16 qualifiers while Olympian Lolo Jones clocked the fastest time of the day (12.82). The 2010 All-American in the event will run again tomorrow in the semifinal at 1:15 p.m. CT, which will be aired live on ESPN.
In the junior competition, three Illini freshmen competed on Friday at Drake Stadium. Marissa Golliday placed 13th overall in the 400m with a time of 55.16 while Kayla Smith timed 24.95 in the 200m and finished in 20th. Kawanna Brooks turned in a bound of 37-2 ½ (11.34m) in the triple jump to finish 11th and a mark of 17-8 1/4 (5.39m) in the long jump on Thursday to place 12th.
Illini competition at the USA Championships continues on Saturday, with Aja Evans in the shot put, Robinson in the 100m hurdles semifinal and freshman Courtney Yaeger in the Jr. 5,000m race. A full schedule can be found below.
