
Former Illini Claims Doubles Title at ATP Challenger

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Former Illini Kevin Anderson and partner Rik De Voest (RSA) took home the doubles title over the weekend at the Odlum Brown Vancouver Open, defeating Ramon Delgado (PAR) and Kaes Van't Hof (USA), 6-4, 6-4 in the ATP Challenger event.
Anderson will next battle current Illini Roy Kalmanovich in the first round of main draw singles at the Levene, Gouldin and Thompson Challenger in Binghamton, N.Y., beginning today. Kalmanovich was one of three players to earn his way into the main draw by claiming three straight victories in the qualifying singles rounds. Also competing at the ATP Challenger is former Illini Ryler DeHeart, who will face wild card recipient Prakash Amritraj (IND) in the opening round. Anderson and DeHeart also will team-up in main draw doubles to take on Somdev Devvarman (IND) and Treat Conrad Huey (PHI).
In action at the ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Ind., current Illini Abe Souza has advanced to the fourth round of singles play, receiving an opening-round bye before defeating Varun Chari (Wisconsin), 6-4, 6-0 and Stephen Havens (Notre Dame), 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9). He faces Colin Hoover (Texas A&M) later today for a spot in the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Souza and current Orange and Blue teammate Connor Roth have advanced to the quarterfinal round after knocking off Ohio State's Peter Kobelt and Steve Williams, 8-6 in the third round. The duo will meet Vanderbilt's Adam Baker and Alex Zotov later today. Roth also will be competing in the singles consolation today against Andrew Kahn (DePauw), after defeating Matt Hansen (Northern Illinois), 6-1, 6-4 in first-round action yesterday.
