MELBOURNE, Australia - 2003 NCAA Champion and former Illini Amer Delic gave No. 3 Novak Djokovic everything he had, however, the defending Australian Open champion Djokovic outlasted Delic's efforts, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), at Rod Laver Arena in the third round of the Aussie Open. This was Delic's first trip to the third round in his 10th career Grand Slam tournament.
In the second round of the Aussie Open Delic beat No. 29 Paul-Henri Mathiew of France 1-6, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 9-7. It was the first time in his career Delic has won a match after losing the first two sets. He now holds a 3-2 lifetime record in five-set matches. His victory over No. 29 Mathieu was the highest-ranked opponent the former Illini has ever defeated in a Grand Slam tournament.
Delic beat fellow American Taylor Dent in his first round match, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
