NORMAL, Ill. -The Illinois women's cross country team recorded a pair of firsts on Friday at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships, taking the team and individual titles. Freshman Kristin Sutherland was first overall in her collegiate debut with a 5K time of 17:47.
"Kristin ran a great race," cross country coach Jeremy Rasmussen said. "She put herself in a good position at the start. It's nice to have someone come in and in the first race of her collegiate career, be able to pull off a win."
The Illinois Intercollegiate marked the third race for Illinois in the 2008 season. It also marks the second consecutive win for the Orange and Blue at this particular race. With four Illini finishers in the top 10, Illinois tallied 37 points, sweeping the competition by 33 points.
"Everyone ran solid races," Rasmussen said. "It says a lot about where we are as a team when our second group is winning meets. The fact that they are doing so well will only push our team forward."
Also scoring for the Fighting Illini was junior Elizabeth Boyle, who placed fifth overall with a time of 18:25. Following Boyle were sophomores Stacy Hague (18:40) and Kate Tysse (18:46), finishing seventh and 10th overall, respectively.
After having next weekend to rest, the Illini will be traveling to South Bend, Ind. on Friday Oct. 3 to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational at 1:00 p.m.
