CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Alecia Beckford-Stewart currently stands in fourth place after day one of the heptathlon, beginning action for the Illinois women's track and field team on Friday at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at the Illinois Track Stadium.
Beckford-Stewart compiled 3,173 points with four events complete, faring the best in the 100m hurdles in timing 14.58 seconds for 898 points. She also timed 25.42 in the 200m for 849 points, jumped 5 feet, 3 inches in the high jump (736 points) and marked 40' 9.5" in the shot put (690 points). Minnesota's Liz Roehrig is currently the heptathlon leader with 3,649 total points.
The only other Illini competing on Friday were in the 10,000m. Sophomore Theresa Brokaw was 13th (37:05.42), while senior Maggie Carroll was 17th (38:47.25).
The Big Ten Track & Field Championships resume on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the decathlon 110m hurdles. The first non-multi event contested will be the men's high jump beginning at 1:15 p.m. Finals will also be held Saturday in the men's and women's long jump, men's discus, women's shot put, women's javelin and men's and women's 3,000m steeplechase.
