BRADENTON, Fla. - Omar Kadir threw four shutout innings of two-hit relief to get his first win of the season and six Illini notched multiple-hit games as Illinois rolled Yale, 17-5, posting season-best run and hit totals (21). Centerfielder Kyle Hudson kept rolling with a 3-for-4, one-RBI, one-run effort, and freshman Craig Lutes knocked his first career home run after replacing Hudson in the field in the eighth inning.
"It was good for our guys from a mental standpoint to get a win," Illinois coach Dan Hartleb said. "Omar coming in and throwing four great innings at a crucial point in the game was big because it allowed us to take control of the game after we scored multiple runs a couple of times."
In the first inning, Illini starter Scott Shaw allowed two hits and hit a batter to load the bases, but struck out two and induced a grounder to first baseman Mike Rohde to keep the Bulldogs scoreless.
Then, in the bottom half of the inning, third baseman Brandon Wikoff singled into the hole at shortstop and moved to third on catcher Lars Davis' base hit to right-center. Wikoff scampered home when the catcher's throw got away as Davis stole second and rightfielder Daniel Webb doubled down the left-field line to drive in Davis. One out later, shortstop Shawn Roof lined a single into right-center, scoring Webb from second and posting the Illini to a 3-0 lead.
But the Bulldogs pulled even with three runs on five hits in the third inning, highlighted by catcher Ryan Lavarnway's solo homer to left-center. Illinois fought back in the fourth with a single run. Webb drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Roof then drove him in with a base hit up the middle, pushing the Illini ahead 4-3.
Yale grabbed the lead in the fifth with two runs on two hits and two walks, but Illinois jumped back in front with a five-run fifth. Snowden led off with a base hit and Wikoff followed with an infield hit. Davis shot a single up the middle to score Snowden and Wikoff came around on Webb's base hit. First baseman Mike Rohde walked and, two outs later, second baseman Ryan Hastings broke out of his slump with a two-run single. Centerfielder Kyle Hudson finished the scoring with a single up the middle to plate Rohde and give the Illini a 9-5 lead.
Illinois added to its lead in the sixth as Webb made it to second when the leftfielder dropped his fly ball, only to be driven in by Rohde's single up the middle. Rohde stole second and came around on Roof's single. Roof then scored on DH Dominic Altobelli's base hit to push the margin to 12-5.
In the seventh, Hudson led off with a single and stole second, moved to third when Snowden reached on an error by the shortstop and scored on Wikoff's base hit. After advancing to second on Wikoff's single, Snowden moved to third on Davis' ground ball and scored on Nick Stockwell's bloop base hit down the right-field line, making the lead 14-5. Then, in the eighth, Joe Mercurio led off with a pinch-hit single and moved to third on Hastings' base hit to right. Lutes came to the plate in just his seventh career plate appearance as an Illini and crushed a 3-1 pitch to right field for his first homer in the Orange and Blue, a three-run shot that gave Illinois the final 17-5 margin.
In full, Kadir pitched four innings of relief, giving up two hits and two outs with a pair of strikeouts while allowing just one runner past first base. Freshman Billy Barrett finished the game with a shutout ninth inning, giving up a hit and striking out one Bulldog hitter.
At the plate, Webb went 2-for-3 with a double, four runs and two RBI, Roof was 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI, a run and a steal, and Hastings went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run. Wikoff hit 3-for-6 with two runs and an RBI, while Davis was 2-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a steal.
Up Next: The Illini continue Spring Trip with a Monday game against Dartmouth at 9:30 a.m. (CT). It is the first of three games Illinois will play against the Big Green.
