Playing against seven of the top ten teams in the country, Illinois finds itself in 12th out of 18 teams at Isleworth UCF Invitational. But at +4, the Illini are just eight strokes behind the leader and three strokes out of seventh in a tight battle after 18 holes of the 54-hole event.
"You can't win the tournament in the first round, but you can sure lose it," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "We came out blazing through the first eight holes and showed some composure in salvaging a decent day. We're definitely within striking distance of a good finish."
Larry Blatt shot 33 on the front nine and finished the day in a tie for 17th at -1 71 on the 7,449, par-72 course. As a team Illinois is one stroke ahead of no. 5 Georgia Tech and just one stroke behind No. 9 Stanford.
There is a three-way tie atop the team leaderboard between No. 4 Oklahoma State, host and No. 34 UCF and No. 7 Southern California, all at -4. East Tennessee State's Rhys Enoch, UCF's Greg Forest and Southern Cal's Jamie Lovemark share the lead individually at -4.
