Illini Post Strong Showings At Day Two Of Drake Relays

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - After seeing the Orange and Blue distance squad dominate Thursday's 5,000-meter run with three regional qualifying marks, the Illini returned to Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa for a full day of competition on Friday. Sophomore Camile Robinson led all performances with a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdle finals.
Camile Robinson's time of 58.33 in the 400-meter hurdles led all Illini. Sophomore Natalie Young was the second-fastest Illini in the event with a 60.44 to place 11th. Sophomore Carlene Robinson placed 13th with a 60.61.
The 100-meter hurdle prelims saw the Illini qualify three athletes for tomorrow's final. Junior Tiffany Nesfield won her heat with a 14.01, while sophomore LaNeisha Waller and Camile Robinson both posted qualifying marks in their heat. Waller recorded a regional-qualifying mark of 13.77 to take first, while Camile Robinson placed second with a time of 14.06.
Another qualification for tomorrow's finals came in the 100-meter prelims by junior Yvonne Mensah. Her time of 11.84 (Wind -2.1) was good for a second-place finish in her heat.
In the relay prelims, the Illini posted two second-place finishes. The 4x100-meter prelim saw sophomore Tiara Armstrong, Mensah, Camile Robinson and Waller tie for second with a time of 45.95, however the time failed to qualify for tomorrow's final.
The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Omoye Ugiagbe, Camile Robinson, Mensah and Carlene Robinson posted a second-place finish with a time of 3:42.78 to qualify for tomorrow's final.
In the field, Mensah recorded a 12.31-meter (40-04.75) leap in the triple jump to place seventh overall. Junior Kristina Jones placed 14th in the event with a mark of 11.94-meters (39-02.25).
The Illini pole vault was led by sophomore Ashley Hanshaw, who placed 13th overall with a vault of 3.65-meters (11-11.75).
