FRANKLIN, Ind.- The Fighting Illini women's golf team finished 2006 fall tournament action today with a second place finish and a sensational record-breaking single round performance at The Shootout at the Legends in Franklin, Indiana. Carding a third-round team total of 292, the Illini set a team-best 54-hole tournament record of 890 strokes. The previous 54-hole record of 901 strokes was set in 2000 at the Arkansas-Little Rock Invite. The Orange and Blue's 18-hole total today also places them second on the school's all-time single-round list, only one stroke away from the school's all-time best 18-hole total of 292 set in 2002 at the Pat Bradley Championship.
"The team played great today," said head coach Renee Slone. "It helped the players to come to a course that they were familiar with and had past success on."
Finishing second out of a field of 18 teams, the Illini were 13 strokes behind tournament champion Campbell University (877). UI golfers experienced similar individual success, as junior Seul Ki Park (71-74-71-216) finished 2nd overall, tying with Toledo's Tammy Clelland and Catherine Fortin of Eastern Michigan. Park fired a one-under third-round 71, putting her even par for her tournament total at 216. Park's performance today tied her for third place on the Illinois individual 54-hole scoring list, tying her own score of 216 set at last year's Shootout at the Legends and head coach Renee Slone's 216, set in 1992. Slone also holds the top two 54-hole totals in school history.
Junior Casey Burden (79-75-71-225) also closed out fall-tournament action on a good note, shooting a career-best round of 71. Burden finished tied for 16th overall, and fellow junior Stephanie Mory (79-73-75-227) was close behind, finishing tied for 26th. Senior Meghan Naik (83-75-75-233) and sophomore Nancy Featherstone (72-79-82-233) tied for 49th overall, rounding-out scores for Illinois.
The Shootout at the Legends marks the final fall tournament for the UI Golfers. The Orange and Blue will begin training for the spring season, which opens February 24-26, 2007 at the Florida State Invitational. The Demirijan Golf Facility, which is slated to open in November 2006, will serve as their primary training facility throughout the winter months.
As far as Illinois' success today, head coach Renee Slone is optimistic. "Hopefully this is a sign of things to come in the spring."
