Ann Arbor, Mich. - The 2005 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships began today with 36 holes of competition, and the Illini stand in ninth place after two rounds with a score of 642. Illinois shot a team score of 317 in the morning's first round and added a score of 325 in the afternoon's second round.
The Big Ten Championships are being held at the par 72, 5,966-yard University of Michigan Golf Course. The teams played in cool temperatures throughout the day, with rain beginning near the end of the first round and falling steadily throughout the second round. Ohio State holds a commanding lead in the tournament, which features all 11 conference teams. The Buckeyes are in first with a score of 593, owning a 19-stroke lead over current runner-up Michigan State (612). Michigan and Purdue are tied for third, one stroke behind the Spartans at 613. Ohio State's Kristen White is currently atop the 66-player field with a 2-over par score of 146.
Senior Lyndsey Milligan was the only Illini golfer to card two rounds in the 70s on the day. She shot a 79 in round one and added a 78 in round two. Milligan is tied for 21st in the individual standings with a 36-hole score of 157.
Sophomore Meghan Naik recorded the low round of the day for Illinois, with an impressive 3-over par 75 in round one. Naik, however, slipped with an 85 in the afternoon and is tied for 36th with a total score of 160.
Junior Megan Godfrey carded consecutive 81s to stand in 42nd place with a 162, while freshman Kristine Cook tallied back-to-back 82s and is tied for 44th at 164.
The third round of the 72-hole Big Ten Championships is scheduled for tomorrow with the fourth and final round on Sunday.
