The second-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team began Big Ten competition with the first conference dual Friday night against the 14th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers. Mark Jayne remained undefeated with a hard-fought win at 133 pounds over No. 6 Tom Clum to move to 16-0 overall. The Illini are now 5-0 overall, 1-0 in the Big Ten and have won eight straight duals, dating back to 2004.
The action began at the 149-pound weight class, where 19th-ranked Anton Dietzen (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill.) upset 14th-ranked Craig Henning, 7-4. Two Illinois losses in a row gave the Badgers a 6-3 lead. At 157 pounds, Cal Ferry (Jr., Machesney, Ill.) dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 15 Tyler Turner, and at 165 pounds Donny Reynolds (So., Frankfort, Ill.) lost to Jake Donar, 8-4.
Illinois took back the lead, 7-6, after the 174-pound match where No. 5 Pete Friedl (Jr., Orland Park, Ill.) defeated 18th-ranked Kelly Flaherty by a major decision, 13-5. The Illini strengthened their lead 13-6 with the exciting 184-pound match. Fourth-ranked Brian Glynn (Sr., Orland Park, Ill.) was defeating Matt Maciag by seven points with just seconds left, when he was able to put Maciag on his back and pin him with only one second remaining. At 197 pounds, No. 14 Tyrone Byrd (Jr., Clinton, Ill.) scored three more points for the Illini, upsetting No. 8 Ryan Flaherty, 3-1.
Illinois went on a streak, winning the next three matches. At heavyweight, No. 14 Mike Behnke (So., Villa Park, Ill.) defeated Lee Kraemer by decision, 8-2. Second-ranked Kyle Ott (Jr., Huber Heights, Ohio) won at 125 pounds, defeating Collin Cudd, 5-2. The 133-pound match was the highlight of the evening, matching up two Top-10 wrestlers in third-ranked Mark Jayne (Sr., Elyria, Ohio) and sixth-ranked Tom Clum. After giving up a takedown in the first period, Jayne came back to score points and take the lead in the second period, 4-3. Clum chose the down position in the third period, and scored an escape to tie the match at 4-4. Jayne scored a takedown with 35 seconds left to secure a 6-5 decision. The Illini's third loss came at 141 pounds, where Cassio Pero (So., Chicago Heights, Ill.) was reversed and pinned in the second period.
Notes: The Illini were without its starters at 141 and 157 pounds in Michael Martin and Alex Tirapelle. Martin suffered a knee injury in the Midlands tournament and Tirapelle was resting with a slight knee injury ... Saturday the Illini return to Huff Hall for a home dual against defending ACC Champion N.C. State at 1 p.m.
