Fighting Illini Dominate Illini Pack-It-Up Challenge

Illinois' women's cross country team dominated the 5K Illini Pack-It-Up Challenge Saturday at the UI Arboretum in Urbana, Ill. The Illini, led by first place finisher, sophomore Stephanie Simms, claimed the top nine spots and had multiple runners set new 5K personal bests.
Simms shaved 39 seconds off her previous best time to take home her first collegiate victory, navigating the course in a time of 18:06. Senior Tabitha Volling, running her last home meet, set a new personal standard of 18:21, eclipsing her old mark by 32 seconds. Third place went to freshman Maggie Carroll, who clocked 18:25 in her first attempt at 5,000 meters.
"I was extremely happy with our top three," head coach Karen Harvey said. "We're counting on those ladies to score points for us this season and, with each one of them setting a personal best, this was a very encouraging day."
Rounding out the top-five were Lisa Phillips in 19:05 and Rachel Hernandez in 19:09. In sixth place was Whitney Laurence in 19:11, followed by Michelle LaMantia at 19:13 and Erin Frommeyer and Katie Coppin, who each ran 19:40.
Illinois' next race is October 1, at the Pre-Regional meet in Peoria, Ill.
