
Fighting Illini Wrap Up Day One At Drake Relays

Illinois' Wayne Angel got his first taste of the Drake Relays as head coach of his alma mater, as the men's track and field team competed today in Des Moines, Iowa.
Angel's squad got off to a solid start, highlighted by performances from Abe Jones, Josh Fournier, Andre English and the 4x400m relay team.
In the 400m hurdles, a pair of sophomores tallied career bests as Abe Jones ran 51.66s to place second while Anthony Young clocked 52.97s to finish 12th. For Jones, it was the first sub-52 second race of his collegiate career.
Fournier took second in the long jump with a leap of 24'05.50", which set a career best mark for the Colchester, Conn. native.
The Fighting Illini 4x400m team of Nathan Vadeboncoeur, Adrian Walker, Tramell Smith joined Jones to win their heat in 3:09.23 and advance to tomorrow's final.
In the 4x1600m relay, Illinois' team of Pete Stasiulis (4:09 split), Jon Houseworth (4:08 split), Jason Bill (4:03) and Tim Hobbs (4:07) took fourth, running 16:30.81.
Another strong relay performance was turned in by the 4x800m team of Smith (1:50.3 split), Aaron King, (1:49.3 split), Zach Glavash (1:51.1) and Jeremy Kruidenier (1:52.1), which finished third in 7:23.81.
Sophomore hurdler Andre English ran 14.15s to qualify for tomorrow's 110m hurdles finals.
In the pole vault, senior Adam Pierson took ninth, clearing 16'08.75". In addition, sophomore Steve Weatherford totaled 6,242 points in the decathlon to place sixth.
