Franklin, Ind. - Illini junior Megan Godfrey (Homewood, Ill.) won the first tournament title of her collegiate career today, capturing medalist honors at the Shootout at The Legends, held at the par 72, 6,134-yard The Legends Golf Course in Franklin, Ind. Godfrey placed first out of 72 golfers with a 6-over par score of 228, carding even-par 72s in rounds one and three and a 78 in round two. The pair of 72s marked the lowest rounds of her collegiate career and none was bigger than today's final-round 72, which vaulted Godfrey from seventh place to the top of the leaderboard.
"This tournament was a lot of fun," Godfrey said. "I'd have to say the difference was my short game. I spent a lot of time in the practice round learning the greens, and when it was time for the competitive rounds, I felt like I had the speed and the break of the greens down. My swing felt great and I hit a lot of solid shots, but when I did miss a shot I was able to make up for it on and around the greens.
Along with recording her first victory and shooting a pair of career-low rounds, Godfrey's total of 228 is the lowest 54-hole tournament score of her career. This also marks her fifth Top-10 finish in 18 tournaments with the Illini.
"I feel like I'm on the map now," Godfrey added. "There was great competition at this tournament and by coming out on top, I feel like I proved to myself and to others that I can compete with the best. It's a great feeling."
Illinois finished sixth out of 12 teams at the Shootout at The Legends with a score of 923. The Illini shot team scores of 306 and 312 yesterday and a 305 - the lowest round of the fall season - in today's final round. Notre Dame won the tournament with a score of 901.
A trio of freshmen followed Godfrey for the Illini. Seul Ki Park had her best finish of the fall, tying for 26th place with a 237. Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Casey Burden tied for 28th with a 238, one stroke behind Park. Kristine Cook tied for 35th place, finishing with a 240.
The Illini are back in action in two weeks, at the Lady Aztec Fall Classic hosted by San Diego State Oct. 18-19.
