West Lafayette, Ind. - The Illinois women's golf team sits in fourth place after two rounds of play at the Lady Boilermaker Invitational, hosted by Purdue University at the par 72, 6,012-yard Kampen Course. The Illini shot a first-round score of 316, then shaved 11 strokes off of that performance with a second-round 305 (the lowest second-round team score of the tournament), good for a 36-hole score of 621. Tennessee leads the 13-team field through two rounds with a score of 605, while Purdue is three shots off the lead at 608. Kent State is in third place, two strokes ahead of the Illini with a score of 619.
Leading the charge for the Illini was junior Marla Cox (Lima, Ohio). Cox is tied for 11th place individually at 8-over par, carding rounds of 78 and 74 for her score of 152. Cox's second-round 2-over par 74 was the lowest round recorded by an Illini golfer on the day.
Following Cox for the Illini, a trio of seniors are separated by a total of just three strokes. Laurin Kanda is tied for 25th with a score of 156. Renata Young sits just one shot back of Kanda, tied for 27th at 157, and Stephanie Cheney is tied for 35th place with a score of 159.
Tennessee's Jessica Shepley and South Carolina's Kristy McPherson (competing as an individual) are tied for first in the 79-player field 4-over par (148).
The third and final round of the Lady Boilermaker Invitational will be held Sunday.
