Illinois Places Fourth at Windon Memorial Classic

Glenview, Ill. - Illinois shot a final round score of 297 today to finish in fourth place at the Windon Memorial Classic with a 54-hole score of 871 (+7). Minnesota won the 17-team tournament with a score of 5-under par 859. Illinois finished just three strokes out of second place in the prestigious tournament, as Purdue and California tied for runner-up at 868. The Windon was hosted by Northwestern at the par 72, 7,058-yard North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.
Illinois senior Joe Affrunti continued to lead the Illini, becoming the Orange and Blue's top finisher for the second consecutive tournament. Affrunti recorded the highest finish of his collegiate career today, finishing in a three-way tie for runner up honors at 5-under par. He shot rounds of 73 and a season's best 66 yesterday and added a 72 today en route to a tie with Minnesota's Justin Smith and Northwestern's Casey Strunk, all at 211. Purdue's Peter Richardson captured medalist honors in the 87-player field at 10-under par 206.
"I feel like this course sets up well for me. It's pretty traditional and played a lot like the courses I grew up playing," Affrunti said of the layout at North Shore Country Club. "After struggling a bit in the first round I really put it together in round two. Then today I started off slow, but played 2-under on the back nine to get back to even for the round. Overall, I feel like I played well and am happy with the performance."
Junior Garrett Chaussard also finished in the Top 15, tying for 13th place at 2-over par 218. After a pair of even-par 72s yesterday, Chaussard tallied a 74 today to place 13th for the second straight tournament.
Illinois is back in action next weekend, traveling to Fairfax, Calif. for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational Oct. 13-14.
