Champaign, Ill. - Christine Masel has been named assistant volleyball coach at the University of Illinois, as announced by Head Coach Don Hardin today. Masel joins the Illini staff after serving as an assistant coach in the United States Professional Volleyball League (USPV).
"Christine is a tremendous addition to our staff because of the unique abilities which she brings to the position and her experience in working with teams at the next level," said Hardin. "Her skills, work ethic and intelligence will help us in our current direction towards a championship. Together with the retention and promotion of Anne Kordes to first assistant, this hire marks a new and exciting era for Illinois Volleyball."
Masel spent the inaugural 2002 season of the USPV as an assistant with the Chicago Thunder, serving under Gido Vermeulen. She also was a volunteer assistant coach at DePaul during the 2001 season. At both programs, Masel was responsible for developing scouting reports of opponents and editing video for scouting purposes. She also assisted in instruction and skill development during practices. In addition to her coaching duties, Masel has served as an associate for Chicago Partners since May of 2000, dealing with finance and accounting litigation consulting.
"This is such an exciting opportunity, I'm thrilled to being a part of Illinois volleyball," Masel said. "Illinois is well known for having one of the strongest programs in the nation and I'm looking forward to working under coach Hardin. He has a great reputation among those involved in the sport, and I know I'll learn a lot from him."
Masel began her collegiate coaching career in 1997 as head coach at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn. and followed as head coach at the University of Chicago from 1998-2000. During her three-year stay at the Univ. of Chicago, she also maintained the athletic department's computer system.
A native of Kansas City, Mo., Masel attended Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. where she was a four-year volleyball letterwinner and played on three NCAA Division III championship teams. Masel earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Washington Univ. in 1994.
