The 13th-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team dropped a 25-6 Big Ten decision to No. 3 Michigan, Friday night in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Illini, (8-2 overall, 1-1 in Big Ten), fell in the first three matches as top-ranked Otto Olsen scored a major decision over Illinois' Brian Glynn at 174 pounds, 17-6, and No. 2 Andy Hrovat of Michigan defeated Jason Potter, 8-5 in the 184 match. In the third match, Illinois true-freshman 197-pounder Tyrone Byrd lost a 7-3 decision to No. 5 Kyle Smith.
Illinois jumped on the board with fourth-ranked John Lockhart's 3-2 win in the heavyweight match over No. 10 Matt Brink to improve to 22-2 overall this season. It wouldn't be until the final match of the night before the Illini scored again as 165-pound All-American Matt Lackey scored a 10-3 decision over No. 9 Charles Martelli of Michigan. Lackey improves to 24-1 in the 2001 season.
Illinois' 19th-ranked Twan Pham lost a 6-1 decision at 125 pounds to A.J. Grant, while Michigan's seventh-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, Foley Dowd, barely got by Illinois' Chad Hay, 6-5. Ryan Berger, ranked No. 19 at 149 pounds, gave No. 7 Mike Kulczycki a fit in a 5-3 loss.
The Illini look to rebound from tonight's loss on Sunday, Feb. 3 as they return to Huff Hall to host Penn State in the conference home opener at 1 p.m.
