Champaign, IL -
After leading Illinois to a Co-Big Ten Championship and #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament's Midwest Region, sophomore point guard Frank Williams (Peoria, Ill./Manual HS) has been named a Third-Team All-American by the Associated Press. Williams becomes the first Illini athlete to earn All-America honors since Kendall Gill was a Third-Team All-American by the AP in 1990.
"This is a great honor for Frank and a feather in the cap of the Illinois program," said Illinois Head Coach Bill Self. He is certainly deserving of being recognized as an All-American, and, as just a sophomore, it's terrific to be known as one of the premier players in America. He sacrificed his statistics a lot this season for the good of the team, and it's evident that people around the nation are aware of how great a player he is."
On the season Williams leads the Illini in scoring (14.9 points per game), assists (128) and steals (59). His average of 15.7 points in conference games ranked sixth in the league. He also ranked third in steals (1.8 avg.), seventh in assists (3.9 avg.), 11th in free throw percentage (.789), and 15th in field goal percentage (.446) in league play. Williams has been Illinois' leading scorer in 13 games and is averaging 19.4 points per game against Top 25 competition. He was named the Big Ten Player of the Year last week by both the media and conference coaches.
"It feels good to be a part of a team with all these great players from around the country," Williams said. "But, you need to take this honor in stride, and its more of a positive reflection of our entire team."
