
Illini Men Finish Sixth At Big Ten Indoor Championships

State College, Penn. - The Illini men's team finished in sixth place at the 2001 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at Penn State's Multi-Sport Complex. Illinois scored 39 points today, giving them a final total of 61 points for the two-day competition. Wisconsin successfully defended its title, winning the meet with a score of 114 points.
Illinois crowned two individual event champions on the track. In his final collegiate meet, senior Babatunde Ridley went out in style by claiming the 60m dash title. Ridley won the event in a time of 6.77 seconds. Ridley tied the Illinois school record and Big Ten meet record during yesterday's 60m dash preliminaries, running 6.74. In addition to his title in the 60m, Ridley placed fourth in the 200m dash, running 21.25.
Junior Jason Van Swol made histroy today by becoming the first athlete to win three straight indoor Big Ten championships in the 800m run. Van Swol won the half-mile in a landslide after burning up the track with a time of 1:48.76, a new indoor personal best. Junior Nick Gow also turned in a personal best in the 800m run, claiming fourth place after clocking 1:49.52.
Also on the track, senior Sherman Armstrong claimed sixth place in the 60 meter hurdles, clocking 8.01 seconds. Meanwhile, Illinois' streak of three straight titles in the 4x400m relay came to an end, as the Illini finished seventh in a time of 3:12.79.
Junior Charles Burton rounded out Illinois' scoring in the field, claiming four points with his fifth place finish in the triple jump, jumping 15.24 meters.
