CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Brian Cook had 18 points and nine rebounds, and
Robert Archibald added 16 points to lead No. 3 Illinois to a 76-58 victory over
Gonzaga on Friday night.
Cory Bradford had 17 points, and Frank Williams had 13 for the Illini (1-0),
who were outrebounded 21-12 in the first half, but took advantage of their size
in the second half by going to Cook and Archibald down low against a much
shorter Gonzaga team.
Dan Dickau had 19 points for Gonzaga (0-1), which ended up outrebounding
Illinois 38-29 but committed 20 turnovers.
Cook scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half and made 7-of-7 free
throws as Illinois built a 72-54 lead with 2:50 remaining.
Illinois led 36-29 at halftime, but jumped out to a 41-29 lead on a
3-pointer by Sean Harrington and two free throws from Cook.
Gonzaga never got closer than seven points the rest of the game.
Zach Gourde had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Cory Violette added 12
rebounds for Gonzaga, which shot 42 percent but made only 4-of-16 3-pointers.
