Champaign, Ill. - Senior outside hitter Shadia Haddad (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula HS) has been named Big Ten Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office this afternoon. Haddad earns the award after leading the Illini to three victories last week.
Haddad averaged 4.5 kills and 3.3 digs per game, while hitting a combined .264 in Illinois' wins over DePaul, Michigan, and Michigan State. In the four-game victory at DePaul, Haddad had a match-high 18 kills while hitting .277 with seven digs and three blocks.
In the 3-1 win over Michigan Friday, Haddad led the way with a season-high 22 kills, while making it a double-double with 14 digs. In Illinois' sweep of Michigan State Saturday, Haddad just missed another double-double, finishing with nine kills and a match-high 15 digs.
Haddad leads the team in kills (3.44 kpg) and ranks first in the Big Ten in digs (3.13 dpg) on the season.
"Shadia has been playing very consistently at every phase of the game and is leading the team in every way possible," Head Coach Don Hardin said. "She has diversified her attack and in addition to hitting with power, she's now hitting in different areas, keeping balls in play, and hitting off-speed shots. She has become very steady on serve-receive and is proving to be one of the better defenders and blockers at the left-side position in the Big Ten."
Illinois (11-5 overall, 4-4 Big Ten) is next in action this Wednesday, Oct. 17, taking on Indiana at 7 p.m. at Huff Hall.
