CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois men's and women's track &
field teams completed their home indoor track seasons today as they
hosted the Carle/Health Alliance Illini Classic at the Armory Track in
front of 1,377 fans. Among the teams that competed in the non-scored
meet were the Illini, Indiana State, Iowa, Iowa State, Purdue, Tennessee
State, Valparasio and unattached runners.
During the meet, a ceremony was held honoring former Illini
athlete and men's track & field coach Bob Wright. His family was on hand
to officially present the illuminated indoor record boards to both the
men's and women's teams that were donated in Wright's memory.
On the track, the story for the men's team was once again the
strong performance by the sprinting corps.
Junior star Sherman Armstrong was the fastest collegiate
finisher in the 200m dash, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor
Championships with a time of 21.50. This marks the third event that
Armstrong has provisionally qualified in this season. Armstrong has
already qualified in the 60m hurdles and the 400m dash. Armstrong also
anchored the victorious 4x400m relay to a provisionally qualifying time
of 3:11.91. Also running the relay were seniors Babatude Ridley and
Tyrone Jones, along with sophomore Kendall McCroy.
"Our relay team ran great," Head Coach Gary Wieneke said.
"Having Ridley in there today really made a difference."
Ridley also ran to a first place in the 60m dash, running 6.79.
Jones won the 400m dash, running 48.85.
The men showed strengths in other areas besides the sprints as
sophomore Jason Van Swol provisionally qualified in the 800m run,
running 1:50.2. Junior Mike Lucchesi won the 5000m run and the team of
sophomores John Kronforst, Nick Gow and Van Swol, along with junior Dan
Horyn won the Distance Medley Relay .
The women's squad had several highlights as well. Senior Kerry
Ann Richards and junior Aleisha Latimer ran to a first and second place
finish, respectively, in the 60m dash. Both sprint stars ran
provisionally qualifying times of 7.37.
"Aleisha and Kerry Ann provide good competition for each other,"
Head Coach Gary Winckler said. "They really race well against each other
which is why they continue to run solid times every week."
Senior Tara Mendozza won the 800m run in 2:11.00, crushing her
next closest competitor by over six seconds.
Other highlights included senior Tisha Ponder winning both the
long and triple jumps, while freshman Crystal Riley placed second in the
60m hurdles in a personal best time of 8.62, and also finished second
behind Ponder in the triple jump.
